Handmade Tapestry Designs

Tapestry designs have always been a way to tell stories, convey meaning, and reflect cultural heritage. The Wanderous Weavers Series and the Kantha Design Series are no exception. These designs pay homage to traditional cultures while incorporating a modern twist.

I have two series the Wanderous Weavers Series and the the Kantha Design Series.

The Wanderous Weavers Series I draw inspiration from the tapestries of native and tribal cultures such as tartans, IIkal weaves and Quechua tapestry. I create a collage assemblage from matte board pieces. I use matte board because it has a texture that complements and pays homage to the homemade designs that I am inspired by. I then scan the matte board collage and use the scan as a template for a design.

The Kantha Design Series is inspired by the traditional hand-stitched quilts from Bengal, India. which were made from old saris and dhotis.  draw a design on a single piece of paper or sometimes several pieces of paper to make a collage that serves as the design template. This method of design stays true to the original Kantha Quilts traditional aesthetic and technique of Kantha quilt making, except mine is on paper.

My tapestry designs are a reflection of the traditional cultures that inspire them, while also incorporating modern elements and a way to preserve cultural heritage, provide economic opportunities, and maintain human-centered creativity.
