Still Life

As a painter, I find that still life offer a unique opportunity to improve my overall drawing and painting skills. Despite the common perception that still life subjects are boring, I believe that such thinking misses the point. The static nature of still life subjects allows me to work in a playful way on composition, gesture, structure, mood, and more.

In my own still life practice, I take inspiration from Cezanne's approach. Cezanne believed that everything in nature was modeled after three shapes: the sphere, cylinder, and cone. By focusing on these shapes, Cezanne became a master of composition. I  studying still life in my art practice to become better at understanding the real forms and then expressing them with my own vocabulary.

The static nature of still life allows me to explore the elements and principles of art and I try to push my expression of the object. It offers me the opportunity to work on various aspects of painting, such as composition, gesture, structure, and mood.
